IELTS Speaking (Part 2): CUE CARD/ Individual Round

General Instructions: In the Speaking module (Part 2), the examiner provides a topic to the candidate, generally referred to as a “Cue Card.” It includes 4-5 questions. The candidate is given only 1 minute to prepare. A paper and pen/pencil are provided by the invigilator for taking notes. It is important to speak about the topic for 2 minutes or until the examiner stops you.

Remember, you have to speak for 1-2 minutes in this round, so don’t worry if the examiner stops you in between.

Key points to keep in mind while attempting:

  • Read the questions carefully and make notes in sequence to maintain a structured response.
  • Ensure that you answer each question in your story.
  • Make your speech sound like a conversation by adding tones and expressions and pausing for a second or two at commas and full stops.
  • Be fluent while speaking. Avoid unnecessary pauses like “ummmm” or “aaaaaaa”.
  • Do not include the examiner in your speech. Avoid using words like “you”, “yourself”, or “us”.

Here is a sample answer for your reference:

Many people have a fear of public speaking. I experienced it too. I was not comfortable interacting with teachers or students during my school days. However, in 7th grade, a new English teacher joined my school—Mrs. Antarparneet Kaur. I was mesmerized by her personality. Her way of speaking English, her fluency, and her confidence were phenomenal. I began to idolize her and was eager to communicate in English as well as she did.

After some time, I enrolled in a poetry recitation competition. She trained me for the event, and during the practice sessions, she completely changed my mindset. Thanks to her guidance and encouragement, I achieved 1st place at the state level. Every teacher and the chief guests appreciated my performance. I also received a gift of 5,000 rupees from the principal of our school, which I saved and invested in a bank.

When I returned home, my parents were on cloud nine. I loved that experience, and there was no turning back. I started participating in speech sessions, debates, and presentations. As a result, I became a confident and skilled speaker. I believe my English teacher worked magic on me and shaped my entire personality. Whatever I achieve in life, I will never forget her lessons and will always be grateful for her teachings.

When I took my IELTS Exam, I found this book The Ultimate Guide to IELTS Speaking” useful for practicing speaking. You can also refer to IELTS Speaking 2024” for cue card preparation. I hope it helps you too!
