Are you preparing for the IELTS exam? If yes, then this information will familiarize you with the concept of IELTS: What is IELTS and what does it include?

Let’s begin with the full form of IELTS.

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is a standardized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers.

What are the modules included in the IELTS test?

The IELTS test comprises four modules:

  • Writing: 1 hour
  • Listening: Approximately 30 minutes, plus an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers
  • Reading: 1 hour
  • Speaking: 11-14 minutes

Important Points:

READING: No extra time to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.

LISTENING: An additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers.

IELTS on Computer or Paper

  • Computer-based test (CBT)
  • Paper-based test (PBT)

You can choose to take IELTS on a computer or paper for both the General Training and Academic tests.

In Computer-Based IELTS you put your answers on the computer rather than on paper.

Otherwise, it is the same test with the same marking as Paper-Based IELTS.

Are there any differences between Computer and Paper IELTS?

Just one difference, in the paper-based test, you have 10 minutes at the end of the test to transfer your answers from the question paper to the answer sheet.

In the computer-based test, this is not the case. You will type your answers directly into the computer and at the end of the test you get only 2 minutes to check your answers.

Every other aspect of the test is the same regardless of whether it is on a computer or paper.

IELTS TEST FORMAT

Writing, Listening, and Reading Modules of the test are always completed one after the other and in the same order.

Speaking tests can be done either before or after the test date, depending on availability.

  • WRITING
  • LISTENING
  • READING
  • SPEAKING

IELTS consists of four components. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking tests.

However, there is a choice of Reading and Writing tests according to whether a candidate is taking the Academic or General Training module.

Difference between IELTS Academic and General Training:

ACADEMIC (AC)

For candidates wishing to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and those seeking professional registration.

GENERAL TRAINING (GT)

For candidates wishing to migrate to an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK), and for those wishing to train or study below degree level.

AC & GT: Same Listening and Speaking tests

I hope this information helps you.
